Mein-ma-hla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary

Mein-ma-hla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area on an island in the Ayeyarwady Delta that consists mainly of mangrove forests with gently rolling terrain. The site contains a rich mix of wildlife and plant species that thrive in the wetland environment.

The sanctuary was established in 1993 under the Myanmar Forest Department and gained international recognition as a Ramsar site in 2017. This designation reflected the site's global importance for biodiversity.

Local communities have long depended on the mangrove forests and medicinal plants found here as sources of traditional remedies and natural materials. These resources remain central to how people understand and interact with the natural world around them.

Start your visit by registering at the Sanctuary Headquarters in Bogale, where staff will help arrange your visit and transportation. Experienced guides can escort you by boat through the wetland areas to spot animals and explore the landscape.

The sanctuary is home to Myanmar's last surviving saltwater crocodile population, making it a rare refuge for this endangered reptile. In 2016, the first national sighting of a fishing cat was documented here, a discovery that surprised wildlife researchers.
