Natural History Museum, Natural history museum in Chingeltei, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
The Natural History Museum is a science museum in central Ulaanbaatar dedicated to the geology, biology, and paleontology of Mongolia. Its halls are spread across several floors and display minerals, stuffed animals, and full dinosaur skeletons, giving a broad picture of the country's natural world.
The museum was founded in 1924, making it one of Mongolia's oldest public institutions, established shortly after the country declared itself a republic. It moved to its current building in 2013, which gave the collections more room and better conditions for display.
The dinosaur section draws school groups and local families who come to see creatures that once lived in the very land beneath their feet. For many Mongolians, the fossil displays are a source of national pride, since the Gobi Desert has produced some of the most important dinosaur finds ever recorded.
The museum sits in central Ulaanbaatar and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. Allow at least a couple of hours to move through the floors without rushing.
The museum displays a complete Tarbosaurus skeleton, a giant meat-eating dinosaur closely related to Tyrannosaurus that was found in Mongolia. Alongside it, fossilized Protoceratops egg nests from the Cretaceous period are on show, and these are among the rarest fossil finds displayed anywhere.
