Chadwick Lakes, Valley system with artificial lakes in Mtarfa, Malta
Chadwick Lakes is a valley system with artificial lakes in Mtarfa created by a series of small dams along a natural basin. The water from these dams flows through the surrounding area at approximately 118 meters elevation, forming a freshwater stream that connects several valleys.
British engineer Sir Osbert Chadwick built this dam system in the late 1800s to capture winter rainfall for farming needs. The construction provided a reliable water supply for the area during the dry season.
The location serves as a meeting point for local families who gather during winter weekends to observe the flowing streams and native wildlife.
The best time to visit is during winter months when water levels are high and the landscape is green. During summer, the system dries out significantly and offers much less to see.
This system contains one of Malta's few permanent freshwater streams that flows year-round. The water supports various native plants, insects, frogs, and other aquatic life that depend on this resource.
