Ta' Qali National Stadium, football stadium
Ta' Qali National Stadium is Malta's largest football stadium, situated in a rural area surrounded by fields and open land. It holds approximately 17,000 spectators across stands positioned on all sides of the well-maintained pitch, with the main stand on the west side and a modern stand on the east side.
The stadium opened in 1980 and replaced an older sports venue in Gzira near Valletta. The location stands on the grounds of a former Royal Air Force airbase that ceased operations after World War II.
The stadium carries the name Ta' Qali from the village where it stands. It serves as a gathering place where Maltese people come together to support their football teams and share moments of community pride. The energy during matches reflects how deeply football connects local residents.
The stadium is accessible by bus, with several lines connecting it to Mdina, Rabat, Valletta and other towns on roughly hourly schedules. The surrounding area is relatively flat with ample space, though it is advisable to check bus schedules and ticket availability before your visit.
In 1984, over 35,000 spectators attended a World Cup qualifying match against West Germany, marking the stadium's highest attendance figure to date. This event remains an unforgettable moment in Malta's football history for local fans.
