Fungus Rock, Natural limestone islet near San Lawrenz, Malta
Fungus Rock is a limestone islet that rises from the water at the entrance to a circular lagoon with dark waters off the coast of San Lawrenz. Its steep walls show natural cracks and weathered patterns carved by wind and sea over many years.
In 1746 the Knights Hospitaller took control of the rock because of a rare healing plant growing on its slopes. They built a guard station and installed a cable system to protect the plant and prevent unauthorized harvesting.
The rock has long served as a landmark that local fishermen recognize and navigate by when heading out to sea. It represents part of the natural identity that connects the people of Gozo to their island.
The best views come from several viewing spots along the Dwejra coast that are easy to reach on foot. You can visit anytime, though morning light works better for taking photographs of the rock and surrounding lagoon.
The rare plant Cynomorium coccineum grows on the rock's surface, and doctors once used it to heal wounds and treat stomach problems. This plant appears in very few places around the Mediterranean, which is why the rock became so valuable centuries ago.
