Buġibba Battery, Artillery battery in St. Paul's Bay, Malta.
Buġibba Battery is a coastal fortification built into limestone cliffs with a semi-circular gun platform facing the sea. The structure includes protective parapets and a rear blockhouse, with water-filled ditches that once surrounded the entire position.
The Knights of St. John built this fortification between 1747 and 1784 as part of their chain of coastal defenses. The position was designed to control access to the bay and support other nearby fortifications in the area.
The battery represents how the Knights organized their coastal defense across Malta through a series of linked positions. Walking through it today, you can see how people arranged their military resources along vulnerable shores.
The site sits on the waterfront between two other coastal towers and is easily visible from the shoreline. Access to the remaining structures is possible, though conditions can be affected by tides and coastal weather.
The battery was part of a network where defenders could communicate using light signals between fortifications. This visual signaling system allowed quick coordination across multiple positions during moments of danger.
