Ximenes Redoubt, Coastal fortification in Naxxar, Malta
Ximenes Redoubt is a coastal fortification in Naxxar with a pentagonal design and tall parapet walls meant to shelter infantry during defense operations against attacks from the sea. The structure underwent full restoration from 2011 to 2013 and now stands along the coastal road between the towns of Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and Salina.
This redoubt was built in 1715 by the Order of Saint John as one of many coastal defenses protecting Malta from maritime raids and foreign naval threats. It was part of a broader strategy to strengthen the island's southern and western shores during a period of frequent corsair activity.
Two storehouses built in the 1700s held salt from nearby ponds, showing how the fortification was connected to Malta's salt trade. Local workers used these buildings to process and store salt before it was shipped elsewhere.
The fortification is easily accessible along the coastal road and can be reached on foot from nearby towns. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection, as the exposed location offers little shade.
Unlike similar fortifications of its era, this redoubt lacked a central blockhouse and consisted only of protective walls forming an enclosed defense line. This simpler design was unusual for the period and reflects a different approach to coastal defense architecture.
