Ximenes Redoubt, Coastal fortification in Naxxar, Malta
Ximenes Redoubt is a coastal fortification in Naxxar, Malta, built with a pentagonal layout and tall parapet walls designed to shelter infantry defending against attacks from the sea. It stands along the coastal road between Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and Salina and was fully restored between 2011 and 2013.
The redoubt was built in 1715 by the Order of Saint John to protect this stretch of coast from maritime raids at a time when enemy ships posed a frequent threat. It formed part of a wider chain of coastal defenses that the Order was expanding across the island during that period.
The redoubt sits along a coastal road that locals use for daily walks and cycling, making it a familiar landmark rather than a distant relic. The nearby Salina salt pans are still visible from the road and give a sense of how this stretch of coast was once actively worked.
The redoubt is easy to reach on foot from the nearby towns of Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and Salina, as it sits directly on the coastal road. The site is open and exposed, so bringing sun protection on sunny days is a good idea.
Unlike most fortifications built by the Order during the same period, this redoubt had no central blockhouse and was made up only of protective walls forming a closed line. This simpler approach set it apart from other coastal works on the island.
