Naxxar Entrenchment, Military entrenchment in Naxxar, Malta.
The Naxxar Entrenchment is a military fortification that extends across elevated terrain and connects four V-shaped bastions through stone walls. The structure consists of defensive elements arranged along a line to provide overlapping fields of fire.
The fortification was built in 1722 by the Knights of Saint John as part of their strategy to protect Malta from invasions. It arose during a period when the Knights were strengthening the islands to maintain their control.
The fortification displays military construction methods from the 18th century through its stone masonry and elevated positioning on the landscape. Visitors today can observe how different sections were connected to create an integrated defensive line.
Access is possible via Triq is-Salina road, which connects the site to nearby areas of Maghtab and Salina. The terrain is elevated, so visitors should expect varying height levels when exploring the fortification.
It is the most complete inland fortification of its kind on Malta, with original bastions despite partially damaged wall segments. The missing sections allow visitors to understand the inner structure and construction techniques.
