Fort Mosta, British military fort in Mosta, Malta.
Fort Mosta is a British military fort in Mosta, Malta, built on a pentagonal plan with a central keep, surrounding ditches, and an outer battery. A sally port connects these parts, forming a single defensive complex on a rocky hilltop.
The fort was built by the British between 1878 and 1880 as one of the main strongpoints along the Victoria Lines, a defensive line running across Malta. It was intended to block any inland advance from the north of the island.
Below the fort lie early Christian catacombs from the 4th century, cut into the rock long before any military structure stood here. Their presence shows that this hilltop was a place of importance to the local community well before the British arrived.
The fort is currently used as an ammunition depot by the Armed Forces of Malta and is closed to the public. You can view the outer walls from the road, but access to the grounds is not permitted.
The fort was built directly on blue clay, a soft ground layer that slowly shifts over time. This has caused visible movement in parts of the structure and requires regular work to keep the walls stable.
