Salina Catacombs

The Salina Catacombs contain five underground burial chambers carved into a quarry face, featuring decorated pillars, window tombs, and interconnected passages. These chambers sit near the Church of Annunciation and showcase the intricate layout of this ancient burial complex.

These burial chambers were created during the second half of the first millennium, reflecting a large Christian community living in the region. A Roman harbor once existed nearby, which explains why this location held importance for burials.

The carved symbols like palm fronds, spirals, and crosses throughout the chambers reveal how early Christians honored their dead in Malta. These patterns tell us about the religious beliefs that guided burial customs.

Access is managed by Heritage Malta and requires advance booking along with staff accompaniment during your visit. Tours typically last around 45 minutes, allowing time to walk through the chambers at a comfortable pace.

The site features rare baldacchino tombs usually found only in Rabat, along with a meal table surrounded by decorated window burial chambers. This unusual arrangement reveals differences in how burial practices varied across the island.
