St Mark's Tower

St Mark's Tower is a defensive tower in Naxxar, standing on Qrejten Point with a square-shaped base. The structure features two floors with a platform on the roof designed for defense.

The Knights Hospitaller built this defensive structure in 1658 under the order of Grand Master Martin de Redin. The tower was part of a larger defensive system with thirteen watchtowers spread around the islands.

The tower shows the building style of the Knights of Malta with its two-story design and cannon platform on the roof. This structure reflects the military strategy of the order, which built such towers along the coast.

Visiting requires advance arrangements with Din l-Art Ħelwa, the organization managing the tower. It is wise to contact them beforehand to confirm access conditions and timing.

A three-pounder iron cannon was installed on the roof in 1792, transforming the tower from an observation post into an armed defensive position. This armament shows how structures were adapted to changing military needs.
