Captain's Tower is a three-story square structure in Naxxar with crenellations at the top and a pigeon house on its upper level. The building shows the straightforward design of this type of fortification with clear lines and practical features.
The Knights built this tower after 1548 when they could not take over the nearby Gauci Tower for their militia captain. They created this new structure as an alternative to establish their military presence in Naxxar.
The tower shows early Hospitaller design on Malta and was built using patterns the knights knew from their former base in Rhodes. Visitors can see these influences in how the building is shaped and in its defensive features.
The building sits in a residential area of Naxxar and can be viewed from its upper levels, giving a view of the immediate surroundings. Access is straightforward since it stands just a short walk from the main street.
During a plague outbreak in 1675, the building and its adjacent structure were briefly converted to serve the sick in the community. This shows how such structures were adapted for urgent needs during times of crisis.
