Għallis Tower, Military watchtower in Naxxar, Malta
Għallis Tower is a square watchtower in Naxxar standing about 12 meters (40 feet) tall on the eastern shore of Għallis Point. The walls use weather-resistant upper coralline limestone on the outside and globigerina limestone inside.
Built in 1658 as part of De Redin's fortification network, the tower was originally manned by a bombardier and three gunners operating a three-pounder cannon. It was constructed during Malta's effort to defend its coastline against raiders and invaders.
The tower shows how coastal defenses worked in Malta, with working gun ports on all sides and two stone ledges marking the different levels.
Visitors can arrange appointments through Din l-Art Ħelwa to go inside and explore the tower. Solar-powered LED lighting illuminates the interior since the structure remains off the main power grid.
In 1955 the tower gained attention when a body was discovered in its well, belonging to someone who had disappeared from Valletta carrying money. This dark chapter remains part of the site's memory and draws curiosity from some visitors.
