Għar Ħasan, Natural cave system in Southern Region, Malta.
Għar Ħasan is a limestone cave system in southern Malta with an entrance measuring about 5 meters high and 6 meters wide. The interior extends approximately 400 meters into the cliff above the Mediterranean Sea.
In the 12th century, a Saracen rebel named Hasan took refuge in this cave and used it as his primary hiding place. This historical event gave the site its name.
The cave carries local legends about Hasan and a Maltese girl, with different versions describing their tragic fate at this coastal location. These stories have shaped how people speak about the place across generations.
To reach the cave, follow the road from Birżebbuġa toward Żurrieq and turn left at the hilltop for the cliff-top parking area. Access is from above, but note that paths can be steep and slippery, especially after rain.
Inside the cave is a notable rock column formation called il-Mara located at a natural crossroad within the system. This formation serves as a visual landmark that many visitors notice during their exploration.
