Banca Giuratale, Baroque administrative building in Victoria, Malta
The Banca Giuratale is a two-story baroque administrative building with a semi-circular extension located in Independence Square. The structure displays classical stone facades and architectural details typical of Mediterranean baroque design.
The building was constructed in 1733 under Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena and designed by French architect Charles François de Mondion. It functioned as the administrative headquarters for the governance of Gozo and Comino islands.
The building anchors Victoria's main square as a focal point for local life and civic matters. People naturally gather around this space as part of their daily routines in the town center.
The building sits in the heart of Victoria on the main town square and is easy to reach while exploring the center. The surrounding plaza is accessible on foot from all directions.
During the 1798 French occupation, the building became the command center for a local uprising on Gozo. The island community used this location to briefly declare independence under the name La Nazione Gozitana.
