The structure experienced damage during the 1551 corsair raid led by Sinam Baxa, leading to reconstruction under Grand Master Ramon Despuig's direction.
The church maintains a tradition of processing the statue of Our Lady of Sorrow through Victoria's streets on the Friday before Good Friday.
