Ninu's Cave, Natural limestone cave in Xagħra, Malta.
Ninu's Cave is a limestone cavern in Xagħra shaped by natural processes, displaying stalactites, stalagmites, and helictite formations throughout its stone structure. Electric lighting has been installed to help visitors see the mineral deposits and rock shapes inside.
Discovery came in 1888 when Joseph Rapa encountered the cave while digging a well beneath a residential property. This chance finding during construction work revealed a completely hidden underground formation.
Local folklore has long connected this cave to stories about supernatural beings dwelling in its chambers, shaping how people view and talk about the place. These tales remain part of how the community understands this underground space.
Entry to the cave involves descending a spiral staircase into the underground chamber below. Visitors should expect tight spaces and should wear sturdy footwear suitable for rocky ground.
Some mineral deposits in the cave are semi-transparent and sparkle under light, while others are completely opaque and match the color of surrounding rock. This variation results from different mineral compositions and formation processes across the cave.
