Tas-Salvatur

Tas-Salvatur is a large concrete Jesus statue standing on a hilltop near Marsalforn on the island of Gozo. The white figure rises prominently above the landscape with outstretched arms and can be seen from various points across the island.

The current statue was installed in 1979 as a replacement for earlier versions that dated back to 1870. A wooden cross built by local farmers in 1901 was one of the earlier representations on this site.

Modeled on Rio de Janeiro's famous Christ statue, this monument faces toward Victoria and holds deep religious meaning for Gozo's residents. It has become a focal point for local faith and identity on the island.

The path to the summit is steep and demanding, requiring good physical fitness to complete. Wear sturdy footwear and allow enough time for the climb if you want to reach the top comfortably.

Local legend claims the hill was once a dormant volcano, which inspired residents to build the statue for protection. Geological surveys have since proven there was never any volcanic activity in this area.
