Lippija Tower, Defensive watchtower in Mġarr, Malta.
Lippija Tower is a limestone fortification with a square footprint and two interior floors, crowned by a flat roof with a protective parapet. The structure rises to about 11 meters and overlooks the surrounding Mediterranean landscape and neighboring towers.
The tower was built in 1637 as part of the Lascaris towers network, replacing an earlier medieval watchtower. It served for centuries as a defense point against maritime attacks.
The tower reflects how 17th-century Malta organized its defense by building sturdy fortifications along the coast. It stood as part of a larger system that shaped how people lived and moved in this region.
The building sits in an exposed coastal position where visitors can enjoy wide views of the sea and neighboring structures. Access is straightforward since the location is not in difficult terrain.
The structure was originally called Torre del Migiarro and housed a small chapel dedicated to Saint Agatha in its early years. This religious element was unusual for military fortifications of that era.
