Tillabéri Region, Administrative region in western Niger
Tillabéri is an administrative region in western Niger that spreads across vast areas and contains the Niger River alongside numerous seasonal watercourses. The landscape features savanna areas and green riverbanks where most settlements cluster together.
The region was created in 1992 when authorities divided the former Niamey Region into two separate administrative divisions. This split laid the groundwork for today's structure and allowed better management of the western territories.
The Zarma and Songhai people shape daily life through their languages, crafts, and celebrations that you see throughout the villages and markets.
The best time to visit is the cooler dry season from October to March when roads are passable. Plan plenty of time for travel between settlements since distances are large and infrastructure is basic.
The region holds significant mineral deposits including the Samira Hill Gold Mine in Téra and major iron ore reserves in Say. These mining activities form an important but often overlooked economic source beyond farming.
