Ahmadu Bello University, Public university in Zaria, Nigeria
Ahmadu Bello University is a public higher education institution in Zaria, Nigeria, divided across two separate sites with a total of 18 faculties and over 110 departments. The various facilities include research centers, lecture halls, and administrative buildings spread across an extensive area.
The foundation took place on October 4, 1962, as the University of Northern Nigeria, after a national education commission recommended new universities following independence. The current name was later adopted to honor a prominent political leader from the region.
The institution carries the name of the first and only premier of Nigeria's Northern Region, reflecting its role as an educational center for the entire northern area. Students from all parts of the country and neighboring nations shape daily life on campus through their different languages and customs.
The Samaru campus holds most academic facilities and the senate building, while law and administration are located on the Kongo campus. Visitors should be aware of the distances between the two sites and plan travel time accordingly.
The grounds cover 7000 hectares (about 17300 acres) of land, making it the largest university in sub-Saharan Africa by physical extent. This area provides space for agricultural test fields, dormitories, and extended green zones between buildings.
