Onitsha, Commercial port city in Anambra State, Nigeria
Onitsha is a commercial city on the eastern bank of the Niger River in Anambra State, Nigeria. Its position on the river makes it a key point for the exchange of goods between different regions of the country.
Migrants from Benin founded the settlement in the early 17th century. In the mid-1800s it became a British trading post when European merchants reached agreements with local leaders.
The name comes from the founding story of migrants who settled along the riverbank and built a trading community. Today the city shows a mix of traditional residential quarters and busy market areas where traders offer goods from across the country.
The Niger River can be crossed by ferries, while a bridge leads to Asaba and provides connections westward. Roads heading north and east open access to other parts of the region and make travel to neighboring states easier.
The city maintains a traditional leadership system with a monarch that was adopted from Benin patterns. This government model differs clearly from the usual structures of other Igbo communities in the region.
