Bakolori Dam, Embankment dam in Sokoto State, Nigeria.
Bakolori Dam is an embankment dam on the Bakolori River in Sokoto State, northwestern Nigeria. It is 360 meters long and 48 meters (157 ft) high, forming a reservoir used mainly for irrigation of surrounding farmland.
Construction began in 1974 and was completed in 1978, with the reservoir reaching its level by 1981. The dam was part of a government effort to bring reliable water supply and irrigation to the dry Sahel region of northern Nigeria.
The area was once home to farmers who grew rice, sorghum, and vegetables along the riverbank using seasonal flooding patterns. This farming way shaped how people lived and worked before the dam changed the landscape.
The site is easiest to reach during the dry season, when roads in the area are more passable. Local facilities are basic, so carrying water and supplies before arriving is a good idea.
The reservoir water is notably murky and low in the aquatic plants that many fish species need to thrive. This has made the site an area of study for ecologists looking at how large dams affect river ecosystems in the Sahel.
