Stadion Galgenwaard, football stadium in Utrecht
Stadion Galgenwaard is a football stadium in Utrecht that serves as the home of FC Utrecht. The venue features four separate stands positioned close to the pitch, allowing spectators to enjoy an engaging view, and can accommodate approximately 24,500 people in a rectangular layout.
The stadium opened in 1936 and initially served two clubs before three Utrecht teams merged to form FC Utrecht in 1970. The original bowl-shaped venue with its cycling track was demolished in 1981 and quickly rebuilt as a modern rectangular stadium with four stands, featuring a moat instead of a fence to separate fans from the pitch.
The stadium is affectionately called 'De Galg' by Utrecht residents, a nickname that reflects how deeply rooted it is in local life. On match days, families and friends gather here to support their team and share the excitement of the game together.
The stadium is located in the eastern part of Utrecht, about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) from the city center and is easily reached by bus, particularly lines 41 and 12 from the train station. The area around it is quiet with few dining options nearby, so many visitors prefer to go into the city center where there are numerous cafes and restaurants.
When it reopened in 1981, the stadium was among the first in Europe to have no perimeter fencing, instead using a moat to separate fans from the pitch. This innovative safety design was later mentioned in a major British report on stadium standards and served as a model for future construction.
