The Wave, Multifamily residential building in Almere, Netherlands.
The Wave is an eight-story residential building in Almere with silver anodized aluminum cladding and two central corridors serving forty-nine apartments. The design uses tunnel formwork construction to create varied floor plans suited to different household sizes.
The building was completed in 2004 as part of OMA's masterplan for Almere's new city center. It set a new direction for residential architecture in the Netherlands through its innovative construction approach.
The structure incorporates modern Dutch design principles through its tunnel formwork construction method, creating varied apartment layouts for different living preferences.
All apartments face south with views toward the waterfront, and the building offers basement parking plus a fitness center located on a middle level. The central corridors provide easy access to all units from entry points.
The facade alternates between smooth and textured aluminum surfaces that shift in appearance throughout the day as light and shadows change across its surface. This dynamic quality was intentionally designed to create a constantly changing visual experience for observers.
