Wildlands, Zoo in Emmen, Netherlands
Wildlands is a zoo in Emmen that divides its grounds into four themed zones representing jungle, savanna, arctic, and play areas, each designed to resemble habitats from different continents. Visitors move between open enclosures where animals live in settings that try to match their native environments, with pathways winding through planted areas and water features.
The park replaced an older zoo in Emmen that closed to make way for a new facility, which opened in spring 2016 after a major reconstruction. The redesign introduced larger spaces for animals and pathways meant to give visitors the feeling of walking through landscapes rather than looking at cages.
The zoo maintains approximately 7,000 animals across 100 species, focusing on education and preservation of wildlife through immersive environmental experiences.
Tickets can be bought online in advance, which often costs less than at the entrance, and regular visitors can get yearly passes that allow entry to all zones. The paths are wide and mostly paved, making it easy to move around with strollers or wheelchairs.
The Jungola hall recreates a tropical rainforest under a single roof and ranks among the largest covered tropical houses anywhere. Visitors walk across suspended bridges and past waterfalls while birds and butterflies fly freely through the humid air.
