Norwegian County Road 258, Heritage route in Skjåk and Stryn Municipality, Norway.
Norwegian County Road 258 is a mountain route stretching 27 kilometers through the Videdalen valley, linking the villages of Grotli and Ospeli. The road winds through this region with narrow pathways and passes through varied terrain at higher elevations.
The road was built in 1894 and served as the primary link between the Nordfjord region and Eastern Norway until 1977. When National Road 15 was completed, this route lost its importance as a main thoroughfare but remains preserved as a historic passage.
The road represents one of Norway's eighteen National Tourist Routes, providing access to regional landmarks and traditional mountain farming communities.
Access is limited to vehicles under 8 meters in length and 8 tonnes per axle, so large motorhomes and heavy trucks cannot use this route. The road closes from October through June, so crossing is only possible during the warmer months.
The eastern section keeps its original gravel surface between 3.5 to 4.5 meters wide with views toward Tystigbreen glacier. This unpaved surface preserves the character of a historic mountain passage and shows how roads once looked in this region.
