Sautso

Sautso is a deep canyon along the Altaelva river that extends for several kilometers with sheer cliff walls dropping hundreds of meters on both sides. The formation features steep rock faces that create striking views when looking across the gorge.

The canyon walls were carved over millions of years as the Altaelva river cut deep into ancient rock layers through continuous erosion. This geological story is visible in the different rock strata exposed along the gorge.

The Northern Sami people call this place Čávžu and view it as a significant part of their connection to the land. This relationship remains visible today in how local communities understand and relate to this natural formation.

The best views come from the western ridge or from a lookout point near the power station entrance. Anyone exploring the gorge should wear sturdy footwear and watch for slippery or unstable ground.

At the top of the canyon sits Lake Virdnejávri, which is held back by a large dam that controls the water flow. From there the river descends into the gorge itself, creating an interesting contrast between the calm lake and the dramatic drop below.
