Norwegian Lady Statues, Bronze memorial statues at Virginia Beach Boardwalk and Moss Beach, United States and Norway
The Norwegian Lady Statues are two identical bronze figures, one placed on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk and its twin in the Norwegian coastal city of Moss. Each figure carries an inscription related to a shipwreck, and both face the direction of the other's shore across the Atlantic.
The figures commemorate the 1891 sinking of the Norwegian barque Dictator off the coast of Virginia Beach, an event that cost many lives. The captain's wife and child were among those lost, which created a lasting connection between Virginia Beach and Moss, the ship's home port.
The Virginia Beach figure stands along the Boardwalk where people pass by daily, giving the memorial a quiet presence in everyday life. In Moss, Norway, the twin statue occupies a similar public space, keeping the bond between the two cities visible to locals and visitors alike.
The Virginia Beach statue stands at 25th Street along the Boardwalk and can be visited at any time of year without any entrance fee. It sits among shops and restaurants, making it easy to combine with a walk along the seafront.
The Moss statue was gifted to Virginia Beach in 1962, and the city later sent an identical copy back to Norway in 1986 as a gesture of thanks. This means each city holds a version that was cast at the same time, making both equally original.
