Pleiestiftelsen for spedalske nr.1, Former leprosy hospital in Bergen, Norway
The H-shaped wooden structure at Kalfarveien 31 spans two floors and contains 44 rooms that originally accommodated 280 leprosy patients.
Built in 1857, the hospital served as Norway's primary leprosy treatment center until 1956, when the State Rehabilitation Institute assumed control of the facility.
The facility houses Armauer Hansen's preserved laboratory, where he first identified the leprosy bacillus in 1873, leading to groundbreaking medical discoveries.
The building now belongs to Entra Eiendom AS and primarily serves as facilities for the University of Bergen, including the Medical Birth Registry.
The structure stands as Norway's largest wooden building, covering 7,235 square meters, and contains the world's first medical patient registry from 1856.
