Turoa, Ski resort on Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand.
Turoa is a ski resort on Mount Ruapehu's southwestern slopes with around 30 kilometers of runs for different ability levels. Eight modern lifts transport skiers to various elevations across the terrain.
The resort began developing in the 1920s when the volcano's southwestern slope was first opened for winter sports. This growth made Mount Ruapehu the North Island's largest winter sports destination.
The name Turoa comes from the Maori language and reflects how indigenous words are woven into New Zealand's winter sports locations. You notice this cultural connection through signage and information displayed around the resort.
The area is best visited on snow-rich days when conditions are ideal for riding. Rental stations and lessons are available at the base, and restaurants and cafes provide places to rest between runs.
The resort has the country's highest chairlift access point at around 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) elevation. Rides from the top offer one of New Zealand's longest vertical descents with considerable elevation change.
