Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Islamic religious complex in Muscat, Oman
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a prayer house and religious center in Islamic style in Muscat, Oman. The complex consists of several interconnected areas with domes, towers, and wide courtyards made of pale stone.
Construction began in the early 1990s at the request of the ruler and was inaugurated at the beginning of the new millennium after several years of work. The building followed traditional techniques and materials from the region.
The building carries the name of the ruler who commissioned it and serves today as a place for prayers and religious gatherings in the capital. Visitors notice the detailed ornaments and bright surfaces that amplify light inside.
The complex opens at set times for visitors outside prayer hours, with modest clothing required. Women should wear a headscarf and all should remove shoes before entering the prayer hall.
A large hand-knotted carpet covers the floor of the main hall and was crafted over several years by hundreds of artisans. The piece ranks among the largest single carpets in the world.
