The National Museum - Sultanate of Oman, History museum in Old Muscat, Oman.
The National Museum of Oman sits in Old Muscat and displays over 5,500 objects spanning different periods of time. The galleries show how people lived here, what they made, and how they connected with one another.
The museum came into being by royal decree and opened in 2016 as the country's first cultural institution with modern preservation standards. This project marked a turning point for protecting Oman's past.
Ships and trade routes shaped Oman for centuries, connecting people across distant shores and oceans. You can see today how the sea remains woven into local life and identity.
The building is open Saturday through Thursday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Friday from 14:00 to 18:00, with final entry thirty minutes before closing time. Plan enough time to explore the different sections without rushing.
The museum was the first of its kind in the Middle East to offer Arabic Braille labeling and open storage areas where visitors could see the collection up close. This made it a pioneer for accessibility in the region.
