Muttrah Fort, Portuguese fort on rocky hills in Muscat, Oman.

Muttrah Fort is a stone fortification built on natural rock formations overlooking Muttrah harbor. The structure features defensive walls and military installations positioned to command views across the waterfront and coastline.

Portuguese forces built this defensive installation in the early 1500s to protect against attackers and maintain control of sea routes. Over the centuries, it played a key role in regional defense and trade oversight.

The fort displays a blend of Portuguese military design and local building methods that you can observe in its stone construction and layout. Walking through it, you notice how two architectural traditions came together in this structure.

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the sun is more favorable and it is cooler. The paths are partly steep and rocky, so sturdy shoes and plenty of water are important to bring.

The site displays cannons from different eras, ranging from 16th-century Portuguese guns to 20th-century artillery pieces. These varied weapons tell the story of changing military technology at this location.
