St. Nicholas Cathedral, Tumbes

St. Nicholas Cathedral in Tumbes is a religious building featuring two semi-circular arches, a two-story sloped roof, and pointed domes decorated with intricate mosaic patterns. The layout follows classical colonial design and provides space for worship and visitors.

Augustinian priests began construction of this cathedral in the 17th century during the Spanish colonial period in Peru. The building arose as part of efforts to spread Christianity in the region.

The interior holds wooden altars and stained glass windows showing scenes from Jesus' life, preserving traces of Spanish colonial times. These religious furnishings reflect the spiritual traditions brought by the colonizers.

The cathedral sits on the central plaza of Tumbes and is therefore easy to locate and accessible on foot. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and respect quiet times when services are not taking place.

A complete restoration in 1985 preserved the original baroque architectural elements while maintaining structural integrity. The work demonstrated great skill in protecting old details while securing the building for future generations.
