Bukidnon, Administrative province in Northern Mindanao, Philippines
Bukidnon is an administrative province in the Northern Mindanao region on the island of Mindanao. The province consists of twenty municipalities and two cities spread across mountainous terrain with extended agricultural areas.
The Philippines made the area an official province in 1914 after it had previously been under different Spanish and American administrative structures. This restructuring brought new connections to coastal regions and encouraged economic development in the interior.
The name comes from the Malaio-Polynesian language and means mountain people, referring to the seven indigenous groups still living in the higher elevations today. Visitors often meet these communities at local markets where handwoven textiles and traditional crafts are sold.
Main roads run through the province connecting the different municipalities, with minibuses and jeepneys serving as the usual means of transport. Travelers should prepare for changing weather as the elevation brings cooler temperatures and more frequent rain.
The second highest peak in the Philippines rises here and attracts experienced climbers who undertake multiday ascents through dense rainforest. On the way up the vegetation changes from tropical trees to moss forests rarely seen at this elevation.
