Lanao del Norte, Administrative division in Northern Mindanao, Philippines
Lanao del Norte is a province in the Northern Mindanao region of the Philippines, stretching along Iligan Bay and shaped by mountains, lakes, and farming plains. This administrative division covers roughly 3,350 square kilometers and groups 22 municipalities, with Tubod serving as the capital.
The Philippine government split the original Lanao province into two separate divisions on May 22, 1959, creating Lanao del Norte with Tubod as its capital. This separation aimed to address local governance and cultural differences between northern and southern populations.
The population includes Maranao, Cebuano, Maguindanaon, and other ethnic groups, with Roman Catholic and Islamic faiths representing the main religious communities.
A network of buses and jeepneys links the municipalities together, with regular connections running to and from Tubod. Travelers should note that waiting times at smaller stops can be longer and road conditions in rural areas vary.
The power plants along the Agus River produce electricity for much of Mindanao and enable industrial activity across the southern region. These facilities rank among the island's most important energy sources and contribute substantially to infrastructure development.
