Zamboanga del Sur, Province in Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines
Zamboanga del Sur is a territory on the western side of Mindanao that stretches from inland hills to coastal areas, covering 26 municipalities and the capital Pagadian. The terrain ranges from agricultural valleys and forested uplands to shoreline settlements with small harbors and fishing villages.
The territory became a separate unit on June 6, 1952, when the original Zamboanga territory was divided and initially included eleven municipalities, Zamboanga City and Basilan. Later adjustments saw some areas split off, gradually forming the current boundaries.
Several groups live across the territory, including Subanen, Maguindanaon and coastal communities, each speaking their own languages and following distinct customs. Along the shore, fishing families work the waters, while inland villages focus on farming, offering visitors a window into both lifestyles.
Rain falls heavily during the wet months, while warmth lasts throughout the year, so pack light clothing and rain gear. Roads link the municipalities, but inland routes can be unpaved and harder to travel after downpours.
The Bayog area holds rich deposits of gold and copper that have been mined on a smaller scale for decades. In some valleys, you can see prospectors at work, offering a glimpse into an industry that remains part of the local economy.
