Muntinlupa, Highly urbanized city in Metro Manila, Philippines
Muntinlupa is a city in the southern part of Metro Manila in the Philippines, stretching along Laguna de Bay. It divides into nine districts such as Alabang and Ayala Alabang, where residential areas sit alongside business centers and shopping streets.
The founding of New Bilibid Prison in 1941 fundamentally changed what had been a mostly farming area. Over the following decades, the town grew into an important part of the capital region with a rising population and urban infrastructure.
The name comes from the Spanish words Monte and Lupa, referring to the hilly terrain with reddish soil. Families from different backgrounds live side by side in the residential areas, while local markets offer produce and everyday goods.
The city connects via the South Luzon Expressway, which runs through several districts and carries traffic from Manila. Visitors exploring the business areas will find office buildings, clinics, and schools clustered together.
Within the city limits lies a large prison complex covering 486 hectares, making it the largest correctional facility in the country. This area occupies a considerable part of the southern district and remains largely out of public view.
