Clark Air Base, Military air base in Angeles City, Philippines
Clark Air Base is an aviation facility in Pampanga on Luzon island that includes several runways and large hangar areas. The grounds sit at around 500 feet (150 meters) in elevation and cover more than 12 square miles (30 square kilometers) in a flat plain between volcanoes.
This installation began in the early 20th century as an army fort and later grew into a central air facility for the Pacific region. After the Second World War and throughout the Vietnam War, it served as a key air hub until a volcanic eruption in the 1990s led to closure.
This place takes its name from a United States officer and grew into a community where American military families lived and worked. Even today you can see remnants of military infrastructure alongside new housing and commercial districts, making the change from base to civilian zone visible.
A visit works best during daylight when weather is clear and buildings and open areas are easy to see. Since the grounds spread over a wide area, wear sturdy shoes and allow enough time to walk between different sections.
The Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991 buried the entire facility under a thick layer of volcanic ash and forced the American military to evacuate within a few months. Today plants grow through old concrete slabs in many spots, showing how quickly nature reclaims an abandoned place.
