Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Art Deco chapel at De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines
The Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament is located on the second floor of St La Salle Hall South Wing and features Art Deco design elements throughout. Narra wood pews decorated with Signum Fidei Star patterns and stained glass windows fill the interior of this university chapel.
The chapel was completed in 1939 by architect Tomás Mapúa as an early example of Art Deco design in the Philippines. During World War II in 1945, Japanese forces killed approximately 60 civilians within this building during a tragic wartime incident.
Regular Mass services and religious ceremonies take place in this chapel, which serves as the main spiritual center for the university's Catholic community.
The chapel is accessible during university hours and provides a quiet space for visitors to experience. Keep in mind that religious services and ceremonies follow a set schedule throughout the day.
The chapel retains many of its original Art Deco details from 1939, including intricate woodwork on the pews and walls. A major restoration around 2000 returned the damaged stained glass windows to their original appearance.
