Rizal Memorial Stadium, Art Deco stadium in Manila, Philippines
Rizal Memorial Stadium is a sports facility in Manila featuring a football pitch, running track, and seating that holds around 30,000 people. The structure displays Art Deco design with a rectangular layout suited for both field sports and track events.
The stadium was designed by architect Juan M. Arellano and built in 1934 on the grounds of the former Manila Carnival. It suffered severe damage during World War II but was subsequently rebuilt and has served the city ever since.
The venue bears the name of José Rizal, a Philippine national hero, reflecting its importance to local identity and pride. Visitors can sense this connection through the stadium's role as a gathering place for the nation's sporting achievements.
The venue is easily accessible by public transport and sits in a central area of Manila. The artificial grass surface allows events to take place throughout the year regardless of weather conditions.
In 1966 the stadium hosted a legendary concert by a famous British rock band that drew tens of thousands of spectators. This event remains a significant moment in the Philippines' music history.
