Commonwealth Avenue, major road in Quezon City, Philippines
Commonwealth Avenue is a road in Quezon City with up to eighteen lanes in some sections, making it the widest street in the country. The route runs from Elliptical Road circling the Quezon Memorial Circle to Quirino Highway, passing through neighborhoods including Philcoa, Tandang Sora, and Batasan Hills.
The street originated from a 1941 plan that was revised after World War II to connect the Quezon Memorial Circle with a new government center. It was built in the late 1960s with just two lanes initially and expanded over time as the city grew.
The avenue was originally designed to connect government facilities and embassies, shaping how the city developed and functions today. Universities, churches, and schools line the route, reflecting how residents organize their daily routines around this central corridor.
The avenue has multiple sections with separate lanes for motorcycles, buses, and bicycles to help organize traffic flow. A speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour is enforced with regular monitoring to keep traffic safer.
Despite its enormous width, the street carries the nickname 'Killer Highway' because of frequent accidents and high speeds. A new MRT Line 7 train is being constructed along the center of the avenue and will reshape how traffic moves once completed.
