Sampaloc, Administrative district in Manila, Philippines
Sampaloc is a district of Manila in the Philippines that spreads across a central portion of the city, touching Quiapo, San Miguel, Santa Mesa, Santa Cruz, and Quezon City. The district takes in residential blocks, educational campuses, and market streets that run along several main thoroughfares linking different neighborhoods together.
The area became an independent parish in 1613 and included Pandacan territory until the two separated in 1712. During the 20th century the district grew into an important center for learning as several universities opened campuses there.
The University Belt zone along España Street brings thousands of students into a district packed with bookshops, copy centers, and small eateries tailored to campus life. This part of the neighborhood shifts in rhythm morning and evening as classes start and end and the sidewalks fill with young people.
Two stations of the Philippine National Railways at Laon Laan and España and the Legarda station of LRT Line 2 offer rail connections into the district. Most main roads see heavy traffic during the day, particularly on weekdays during morning and evening rush hours.
The Dangwa flower market on Dimasalang Road serves as the main distribution center for cut flowers from across the country. Vendors start unloading fresh deliveries before sunrise and prepare bouquets for buyers from all over Metro Manila.
