Mounts Banahaw–San Cristobal Protected Landscape, Protected landscape with two volcanoes in Calabarzon, Philippines
Mounts Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape is a protected area in the Calabarzon region that contains two volcanic peaks of different heights. Mount Banahaw rises to about 2,000 meters while Mount San Cristobal reaches approximately 1,470 meters.
The area received protection in 1921 as a forest reserve dedicated to preserving forests and water resources for future generations. This early conservation effort marked the beginning of organized protection for this volcanic landscape.
Mount Banahaw holds deep religious meaning for local communities who view it as a sacred place. This spiritual connection shapes how people relate to the mountain and the landscape around it.
The area is somewhat challenging to explore due to its elevation and wet conditions, requiring proper preparation. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring weather-resistant clothing as conditions can change quickly.
The protected area is home to rare animals like the Philippine warty pig and Luzon fruit bat that exist nowhere else. Most notably, the plant Aglaia banahaensis grows only here and exists nowhere else in the world.
