Don Catalino Rodriguez Ancestral House, Heritage house in Sariaya, Philippines.
The Don Catalino Rodriguez Ancestral House is a two-story residence with a stone lower level and wooden upper floor, featuring large sliding windows with stained glass and louvered panels for air flow. The structure occupies an entire city block near the church park, with a spacious veranda that opens onto surrounding streets.
The house was built in 1922 and served as a gathering place for influential figures of the time, including President Manuel Quezon. Its creator was Don Catalino Rodriguez, who served as mayor of Sariaya in the early 1900s.
The interior displays decorative wall paintings and wood carvings created by regional artisans, reflecting the lifestyle and tastes of the Philippine elite who lived here. These artistic elements reveal how the family expressed their social standing through the objects and designs that surrounded them daily.
The house now operates as a museum where visitors can dress in period costumes for photographs while exploring the rooms at their own pace. The wooden staircase with its carved details provides a natural way to move between the different levels and sections of the residence.
The residence stands as an early example of how Philippine and European design merged in a regional city during the 20th century. This blend of local craftwork and imported furnishings offers a rare glimpse into how regional elites engaged with global styles while maintaining local artistic traditions.
