Laguna, Administrative province in southern Luzon, Philippines
Laguna is a province on the island of Luzon that spreads south of Manila Bay between rice fields and wooded hills. Small towns sit along the roads, while flat coasts line the large lake to the north.
Spanish administrators founded this region in the 16th century as one of the first provinces under colonial control. The town of Bay served initially as the administrative seat before it moved to other locations later.
The province takes its name from the Tagalog word for lake, referring to the large bay to the north. Travelers still see wooden boats along the shore and small fishing villages beside the shallow water.
Visitors reach the province through several highways that run south from the capital and pass through urban and rural areas. Buses and vans operate regularly to the different municipalities, so travelers can move within the region.
Hot springs emerge from the ground at several locations and draw visitors who want to use the warm water. These natural thermal sources come from volcanic activity deep below the surface.
