Bhir Mound, Archaeological site in Taxila, Pakistan
Bhir Mound is an excavated ancient settlement with remains of houses, streets, and structures from the early periods of South Asia. The ruins reveal a dense network of residential buildings organized around courtyards and a structured urban layout.
The site was occupied between 800 and 525 BC and formed part of the ancient city of Taxila. Excavations beginning in 1913 uncovered the buried structures and revealed the region's early urban development.
The site reveals layers of different faiths and trading communities that occupied the space across centuries. The way houses and public areas were arranged shows how people organized daily life and commerce together.
The site is best explored on foot, and sturdy shoes are recommended due to uneven ground surfaces. The excavation area is relatively open but has limited pathways and little shade, which can be tiring in hot weather.
Coins from different cultures were discovered here, including Persian, Greek, and local mintings. These finds demonstrate that the settlement was a major trading hub connecting different regions.
