Hingol National Park, National park in Balochistan, Pakistan
Hingol National Park is a protected area in Balochistan that extends across the districts of Lasbela, Gwadar and Awaran. The landscape ranges from coastal areas on the Arabian Sea through rugged mountain chains to wide desert plains that have sparse vegetation.
This protected area was established in 1988 to preserve the wildlife and plants of this large region. Long before that, different communities lived here and left traces in the form of rock engravings and structures.
Rock paintings from early times and remains of monasteries show that people settled here over many centuries. The shrine of the goddess Hinglaj draws pilgrims from distant regions and reminds visitors how this desert is seen as a spiritual place.
Reaching this area requires a vehicle suitable for rough terrain and forward planning because of the remoteness and lack of infrastructure. The best time to visit falls between October and March, when temperatures are more bearable.
This area has mud volcanoes that release methane gas and change slowly over the years. Some rock formations look like figures and have received names from travelers, such as the one called Princess of Hope.
