Balochistan Sphinx, Rock formation in Lasbela District, Pakistan
The Balochistan Sphinx is a rock formation in Lasbela District shaped by natural erosion into a head-like figure with distinct facial features. The soft stone layers have been carved by wind and water over time into recognizable shapes including eyes, a nose, and a defined jaw.
The formation developed over millions of years as soft sedimentary rock layers were worn away by natural erosion in this coastal region. It became more accessible to visitors in 2004 when the Makran Coastal Highway was completed, providing a direct route through the area.
Local geologists and researchers study the formation to understand the geological processes that created its sphinx-like appearance through wind and water erosion.
The formation lies about 240 kilometers from Karachi within Hingol National Park and can be reached via the Makran Coastal Highway. Visitors should bring plenty of water and be prepared for an open, dry landscape with little shade or shelter.
The formation exhibits proportions and features comparable to the Egyptian Sphinx, including shapes resembling a head-dress and defined paws at its base.
